The incident occurred at approximately 12:30 a.m. on Thursday, May 23, at 1 Schroeder St. in Yonkers.
Upon arrival, officers located the victim with an apparent life-threatening laceration to his neck, Yonkers PD Det. Sgt. Dean Politopoulos said.
First responders rendered medical aid to the victim and transported him to a local area trauma center where he was placed on artificial life support and listed in grave condition. The area was cordoned off and a criminal investigation was initiated.
Detectives from the Major Case Unit and Crime Scene Unit responded to the scene, interviewing subjects and witnesses, reviewing surveillance video, and processing forensic evidence, according to Politopoulos.
An investigation has yielded that the victim and a group on Schroeder Street, who were known to each other, engaged in a dispute, Politopoulos said.
The incident escalated into violence when a suspect emerged from the group and allegedly struck out at the victim with a sharp instrument, causing severe injury to the victim’s neck, Politopoulos said.
The victim collapsed at the scene and the suspect fled the area, according to Politopoulos.
Investigators are working the case and actively developing information in an effort to identify the perpetrator and effect an arrest.
The victim has been identified by police as Kentrail Newton, a resident of Warburton Avenue in Yonkers.
